Armor Protéines is a company 100% held by "La Compagnie Laitière Européenne" under the control of the BONGRAIN group. Its turnover is about 100 Millions EURO; the company employs 320 persons working in 3 different French locations: St Brice en Coglès (caseinates, WPC, milk calcium, milk substitutes, milk protein hydrolysates, milk peptides), Loudéac (lactose, delactosed whey powders, delactosed whey permeates), St Méen Le Grand
(WPI).
Business strategy
As a subsidiary of one of the biggest French cheese company BONGRAIN, Armor Protéines mainly aims at getting added value from whey and milk not used in the cheese manufactures. Therefore Armor Protéines has developed the production of caseinates, whey protein concentrates, whey protein isolates, lactose, delactosed and demineralised wheys, milk bio-components like lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, glycomacropeptide, milk calcium, milk minerals, just as milk substitutes.
R&D is a key factor of success since more and more specific ingredients will have to widen the range of products of Armor Protéines in order to warrant long term profitability.
Because most ingredients produced by Armor Protéines are powders, the drying of liquids has been one core activity of the company. Beyond the biochemical composition of these powders, their physical properties are now considered as a critical issue for competitiveness.
Role in the project
Armor Protéines will contribute to the project as follows:
selecting and providing raw materials (WPC, delactosed whey permeate) for trials at lab and industrial scale, just as their physical characteristics in order to study the liquid atomisation process;
running industrial spray drying experiments for validation of the models developed in the project;
determining physical properties of the products obtained from pilot and industrial runs. Study possible linkages between physical properties and degree of agglomeration as well as biochemical composition of the products.
Qualification of key personnel
The R&D staff is composed of 8 persons, of whom 3 are process technologists and 2 are technical assistants with a wide experience (over 10 years) in spray drying. The production staff present in the various powders production plants of Armor Protéines have acquired quite a long experience in industrial runs since this has been a core activity of the company for many years.
