Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg, Department of Mechanical Process Engineering
The Chair Mechanical Process Engineering at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Sommerfeld since October 1994. The institute has 17 research engineers and four technicians. The research activities of the institute comprise various areas in the field of process engineering, powder technology and multiphase flows. Three working groups on the following topics have been established:
A major research activity at the institute is related to the development of advanced numerical tools for the prediction of industrial multi-phase flow processes. This includes the development and improvement of models to describe the relevant micro-processes and transport phenomena. For this purpose also detailed experimental studies are performed for the analysis of the relevant transport phenomena and for providing data for the validation of the numerical predictions. Over the past years the institute has contributed to the modelling and prediction of dispersed turbulent gas-particle flows, sprays and bubbly flows. For the experimental studies modern optical instrumentation is applied, such as flow visualization, particle tracking velocimetry, Laser-Doppler anemometry and Phase-Doppler anemometry.
